Steve Perkins Associates (SPA), a specialist health consultancy based in Leicestershire, has been awarded the Site Safety Initiative accolade at the recent national Highways Awards. The prestigious awards held in London, recognises, rewards and celebrates the very best in the road network sector.
The Site Safety Initiative award acknowledges SPA’s work to improve health protection for highways construction and maintenance workers on the M25 and crowned it as ‘industry leading.’
SPA works in partnership with Connect Plus who are responsible for the operation, maintenance, renewal and improvement of the 440Km of the M25 motorway network around the nation’s capital.
Together, their ‘Healthier Highways’ initiative has made great strides in improving the protection of construction worker’s health on the M25.
This work bridges a significant gap in workplace heath. Currently the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that some 4000 construction workers across all parts of the UK construction sector, die each year from diseases caused directly by their work.
Steve Perkins, Managing Director of SPA, said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to win this award. It recognises the fantastic work of our expert consultants and the volunteer construction professionals from the M25 supply chain who serve on our Healthier Highways team. Most importantly though, we hope it contributes to raising the profile of the considerable need to tackle work-related ill-health in construction.”
Judges’ comments on the award:
‘This year’s winner took a novel approach to supporting sector well-being and safety, delivering strong evidence of culture change and a preventative approach based on excellent engagement with working groups.’
SPA’s consultancy expertise combines the scientific disciplines of occupational hygiene, occupational health, ergonomics and human factors, with business change management and health culture transformation.
